The art of care

EVERY day, thousands of aged care workers across Australia quietly make a difference in people’s lives.

Whether they’re providing clinical nursing, helping with meals and medication, assisting around the home or simply taking the time to listen over a cup of tea, their work allows older Tasmanians to continue living safely and independently in their own home. Aged Care Employee Day, celebrated on 7 August, is an opportunity to recognise these dedicated professionals and say a heartfelt thank you. At The District Nurses, I have the privilege of seeing this commitment every day.

Our nurses, care workers, domestic assistants, administration teams and support staff all play an important role in helping Tasmanians maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life. Our people pride themselves on delivering moments of kindness that build trust, create connection and remind people they are valued.

This year also marks the beginning of a special chapter for The District Nurses.

Later this year we will celebrate 130 years of caring for Tasmanians, a milestone few organisations have the privilege of reaching.

Since 1896, generations of dedicated staff have walked through front doors across our state, providing compassionate care to people in their homes.

While healthcare has changed enormously over those 130 years, the values that have guided our organisation have remained remarkably consistent. Our people have always been, and continue to be, our greatest strength.

As we begin reflecting on this milestone, it feels fitting that we first acknowledge those who make it possible.

The legacy of The District Nurses has been built by thousands of caring people who have chosen to make a difference in the lives of others.

To every member of our team, past and present, thank you for your professionalism, your compassion and your commitment to caring for Tasmanians.

Because caring for others isn’t just what we do, it is who we are.
