GLENORCHY City Council, along with event partners the Lions Club of Glenorchy, has announced an exciting line up for its 2015 Carols by Candlelight.
The free, ticketless event will be held on Saturday 12 December at Tolosa Park.
Traditionally held on the second Saturday in December, this year’s Carols will feature specially commissioned children’s entertainment with a humorous Christmas story staged by popular Hobart performers, Big Monkey Theatre Company, courtesy of new event sponsors, YMCA Hobart.
Spokespeople and co-chairs of the Glenorchy Carols Organising Committee Steve King and David Pearce said they had responded to patron requests to refresh the children’s entertainment section.
“Many patrons will be familiar with the Big Monkey Theatre Company’s wonderful Botanical Garden’s summer family shows,” they said.
“The same musical humour will be present in this special children’s section on the night with Big Monkey taking on a twist on a popular Danish Christmas tale.
“All we can tell you without spoiling the story, is that only an appearance by Santa can save Christmas.”
Ald King and Ald Pearce said the event would be hosted by ABC Breakfast presenter Ryk Goddard and young upcoming vocalist Régan Schmidt.
“Ryk is the master of firing up a large audience – so our traditional emphasis on getting everyone up and singing is going to make this a really memorable night,” they said.
Appearing on stage and among the audience will be a host of well-known local choirs including the Choir of High Hopes, Vivace Young Voices, Bowen Road Primary School, Dominic College Choir, Hobart Barbershop Men’s A’capella, Hobart Women’s Harmony and Ta Daa Entertainment.
Glenorchy Carols’ regulars the Glenorchy City Concert Brass, as well as the Tasmanian Song Company and Nicole Rosson Dancers, will also be there this year.
“Together this line up of spectacular local talent will spread the joy of Christmas with the full complement of Christmas carols,” Ald King and Ald Pearce said.
Glenorchy Carols by Candlelight is a popular family tradition with organisers encouraging a relaxed family feel with room to enjoy a picnic, and plenty of onsite parking.
The event will be held on Saturday 12 December at Tolosa Park with gates opening at 6pm for a 7.30pm start and will conclude at 10pm.
A free shuttles bus will be available, leaving from the Glenorchy Bus Interchange from 6.30pm and returning after the last carol.
Carols by Candlelight is a free community event developed by the Lions Club of Glenorchy and Glenorchy City Council, with major sponsor YMCA Hobart.
