COMMUNITY members are urged to be aware of requirements for swimming pools and spas this summer.
Glenorchy City Council building officer Dylan Jeffes said with summer now here and temperatures rising, you might be considering purchasing or constructing a swimming or spa pool for your property.
“Are you aware of the laws in Tasmania that dictate whether Council Permits and/or appropriate swimming pool access barriers are required for these types of structures?” he said.
“Compliant access barriers for swimming pools and spas are required in every case when the water level is 300mm or greater.
“All access barriers are to be certified by a licenced building surveyor prior to them being installed on site.
“As you consider your options this summer, please make sure you make yourself aware of the state requirements and ensure you contact Council’s Building Section if you require any assistance.
“We are here to help you.”
Specific requirements for swimming and spa pools are outlined in the Director’s Determination – Categories of Building and Demolition Work at www.cbos.tas.gov.au/topics/resources-tools/builders-trades.
In addition to a Building Permit, please note that other Council issued permits may be required for swimming pool or spa developments.
Penalties can apply for non-compliance with Tasmanian Legislation.
Mr Jeffes also highlighted that as an owner of a pool, you are responsible for the safety of anyone that enters your pool, whether willingly or unwillingly.
