Success for Southern Tasmanian Softball Association

THE Southern Tasmanian Softball Association (STSA) has won the Softball Tasmania Open Women’s A-Grade Shield during the state championships in Ulverstone on 7 and 8 November.

Under a coaching team of Kelvin Clarke and Helen McDonald, the Derwent Park-based team battled it out against the Northern Tasmania Softball Association (NTSA) following a “round robin” competition.

STSA started the game batting and took the opportunity to score runs early but NTSA never gave up the chase and slowly drew closer to STSA’s run tally as the game progressed.

The final inning saw NTSA score a late two runs to come within one run of a draw, but STSA’s women were able to keep the final fielding inning tight to shut out NTSA, with a final score of 10 – 9.

This was STSA’s first Women’s A-Grade Open Shield since the 2004/05 season.

STSA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) was awarded to Mandy McGuinness who not only fielded well but had 13 safe hits from 14 turns at bat, this included four three base hits, four two base hits and five single base hits.

Other strong batters were Jane Brooks, Alison Woolley and Maria Shelverton and the top fielder was Leanne Cooper.

The STSA Open Women’s A-Grade team comprised 13 players from the six teams playing in STSA’s 2015/16 summer roster.

The Southern Tasmania Softball Association is based at Gepp Parade in Derwent Park.
