THE establishment of a junior soccer club has seen a local community come together with a sense of spirit and comradery.

A group of committed Goodwood parents wanting their children to have the opportunity to participate in organised sport has banded together to form three teams that make up the Goodwood Football Club.

Now in its second year, the Goodwood Football Club has an under 6s, under 9s and under 11s team in the Northern Suburbs Junior Football Association (NSJFA).

Under 9s coach and parent Tarasa Barr said the club was established to help the children develop personal and physical skills, along with providing families the opportunity to come together with a common focus.

“We’ve seen a massive take from local families since establishing the new club in 2018,” she said.

“It gives the kids the opportunity to participate in sport in the community because there isn’t anything else for this age group.

“If we as parents can’t start something then the kids will miss out, and by banding together as one these kids can participate in anything.”

Mrs Barr said the initiative was also playing an important role in tackling some of the social challenges previously faced by the community, including social and cultural exclusion and anti-social behaviour.

“There has been a noticeable change in the children who are developing confidence and a united spirit through their love of sport,” she said.

“Their self-esteem is the most amazing part – we’ve seen some really quiet kids that would always have their head down now hold their head high and smile.”

Under 9s player Taylah Clark said the club had given her the opportunity to develop her soccer skills and have lots of fun.

“I’ve been able to spend more time with people from the community and make new friends,” she said.

Mrs Barr said the next step for the club was to fundraise and recruit support to get club uniforms for the 2020 season.
