New partnership merges sport and education

THERE is now a defined link between next generation learners and next generation cricketers thanks to a new partnership between the Glenorchy Cricket Club and Kumon Education.

The new partnership has seen Kumon invest in the club as naming rights sponsor of all junior teams until the end of 2018.

With centres located in North Hobart and West Moonah, Kumon provides practical numeracy, literacy and out-of-school support to young people in the community.

Glenorchy Cricket Club general manager Andrew Moore said the Kumon sponsorship would provide a number of benefits for the club.

“This includes allowing us to invest in more coaches, reducing fees and increasing our footprint in the community,” he said.

“This is an important partnership as the significance given to sport relies on education.

“It is not the sport itself that is important, but rather the nature of the experiences and support that it creates in the community.”

To help celebrate the new partnership, Glenorchy Cricket Club delivered a “skills zone” at the recent Glenorchy Carols by Candlelight.

The skills zone featured a number of skills-based cricket activities that encouraged light competition.

“Captain Hurricane even made a special appearance to say hello and give a thumbs up to the new partnership – the kids loved it,” Mr Moore said.

Glenorchy Cricket Club is situated at KGV Oval in Anfield Street, Glenorchy.

It delivers cricket for entry level Milo Cricket (for five to eight-year-olds), junior boys and girls, men, women and Masters Over-40s.
