THE Glenorchy Cricket Club is geared up and ready for the start of the season next month with the installation of new nets thanks to a $20,000 grant from the Tasmanian Government.

Glenorchy Cricket Club is part of Cricket Tasmania’s Premier League competition.

The club’s membership has been steadily increasing in recent years and now comprises more than 150 players, including professional cricketers, social players and juniors from five years of age upward.

Glenorchy Cricket Club vice president and director of cricket Simon Stebbings said he was thrilled with the much-needed new nets for their expanding club.

“The funding will not only support our growing junior and women’s cricket, but also our very important partnership with the Intercultural Sports League (ICSL),” he said.

“The ICSL now has 10 teams of multicultural players and is in desperate need of a training facility to accommodate the increased requirements of our players.

“In the last couple of years, our junior cricket and female cricket programs at Glenorchy Cricket Club have also expanded so the upgraded facilities will benefit these players as well.”

Liberal Member for Denison Elise Archer, who has been a longtime supporter of the Glenorchy Cricket Club, assisted the club in securing the funding for the new equipment.

“Supporting grassroots sporting organisations like Glenorchy Cricket Club and other community clubs is one of the best ways to increase participation in sport and recreation, and promote community engagement,” Ms Archer said.

“The partnership between the Glenorchy Cricket Club and the ICSL has been developing over a number of years and it is fantastic that they will be able to share these new training facilities during the coming cricket season.”

Mr Stebbings said Ms Archer had always been a big supporter of integrating multicultural community members into local cricket.

“We are very fortunate to have such a positive and passionate MP as a part of our club,” he said.
