BERRIEDALE resident and figure skater Amy Pailthorpe has emerged as the first-place winner in the Intermediate Ladies Division at the 2018 Crystal Challenge.

Held in Melbourne in August, the Crystal Challenge is an ISA Benchmark Event that gives skaters an opportunity to improve their technical element score should they wish to compete internationally.

Scores received also go toward a skater’s national ranking.

Ms Pailthorpe, who has been skating since she was eight-years-old, said she always enjoyed the friendly competition at the Crystal Challenge.

As the sole Tasmanian representative, the 19-year-old said it was an “amazing feeling” to take home first place in her division.

“I felt very proud to represent Tasmania at the competition and worked very hard on the techniques of the elements in my program,” she said.

“I had to make some changes to my program due to recent rule updates, which made it a little more challenging, but I felt confident going in as I knew I was going to skate the best that I could at the time.”

Ms Pailthorpe said winning first place was a “massive confidence boost.”

“Skating is a tough sport and most definitely has its challenging times,” she said.

“But to win this has proved to myself that I have the potential to do more.

“It has also shown me that even though Tasmania has a small skating community and our own challenges, we are small, but mighty.”

Ms Pailthorpe will now go on to compete in the Australian Figure Skating National Championships in Sydney later this year.

“One day in the future I hope to compete in an international competition,” she said.

“It would be a dream to compete in another country, experience an international competition and make friends from around the globe.”
