Local cyclist ready to roll in Melbourne charity challenge

GLENORCHY resident Marilen Silverio will be among at least 10,000 cyclists who will go the distance to support the thousands of disadvantaged children across Australia in the ‘Around the Bay – Ride for a Child in Need’ event.

Gearing up for it’s 25th anniversary on Sunday 8 October in Melbourne, Around the Bay is the nation’s largest single-day bike ride and a major fundraiser for The Smith Family.

Through sponsorship from riders, The Smith Family is aiming to meet its fundraising goal of $1 million to provide crucial educational support for the more than 1,700 children in need.

Ms Silverio, who will take part in the 135-kilometre event, has raised more than $500 for the cause.

“The fact that one in seven kids are living in disadvantage in what is supposed to be the lucky country really prompted me to get involved – that is too many, even one child is too many,” Ms Silverio said.

“Being a mum also brings the problem closer to home for me.

“I consider myself fortunate having a good job, but others don’t have it so lucky, so I believe in this cause.”

The Smith Family’s Victorian general manager Anton Leschen praised riders’ commitment to the event and to helping children in need.

“Every dollar raised by riders who get sponsored helps The Smith Family give disadvantaged children practical support with their education, including school books, shoes and uniforms, and access to learning programs to support their literacy, numeracy and aspirations,” he said.

“There are more than 1.1 million Australian children and young people living in poverty and the fact is that without additional support they are less likely to succeed at school and more likely to struggle financially as adults.

“Our long-established, nationwide ‘Learning for Life’ program helps to break the cycle of disadvantage for tens of thousands of children and we can help more of them through the support of riders who go the extra distance to get sponsored.”’
