Lights on for Brooker Highway upgrade

A NEW milestone to ease congestion on Tasmania’s roads has been reached with the removal of the old roundabout linking Howard Road and the Brooker Highway and its replacement by traffic lights.

The changeover work was successfully completed on 10-11 February, with the traffic lights switched on and both Elwick and Goodwood and Howard road intersections now aligned with traffic on permanent lanes.

Minister for Infrastructure Rene Hidding said the road works would improve traffic flow and congestion for motorists during peak times.

“These improvements will make travelling on the Brooker Highway far more efficient, saving time and money for both motorists and local businesses,” he said.

Tasmanian Liberal Senator Eric Abetz said the upgrade was critical to Tasmania’s transport network.

“More than 1.6 million tonnes of freight is carried annually along the highway, so efficient traffic flow through this section of road is critical for productivity,” he said.

The new lights will also improve safety at the intersection, an issue that the Speaker of the House of Assembly and Member for Denison, Elise Archer has been campaigning for over a number of years.

“Alongside community members, I have campaigned for years to have safety improved on this section of the Brooker, particularly for pedestrians at the Howard Road intersection from Goodwood,” she said.

Motorists are encouraged to be patient as drivers adjust to both the new conditions and to increased traffic volumes with the recent start of the school year.

Some minor works on and close to the highway will continue during the next few months and ongoing changes to traffic conditions are expected.

The federal government is committing $25.6 million to the $32 million project, with the state government to provide the remaining cost of $6.4 million.
