CLAREMONT’S little athletes are aiming for higher honours following a visit from Commonwealth Games gold medallist high jumper Brandon Starc.

Mr Starc spoke to the young athletes from the Claremont Little Athletics Centre as part of the ‘Coles Little Athletes Big Dreams’ program, which inspires children to reach their full potential in both sport and life.

Mr Starc said he thoroughly enjoyed meeting the next generation of Aussie athletes from Claremont.

“Little Athletics is where it all began for me,” he said.

“It’s where I learnt the fundamental skills and developed my love for the sport and without Little Athletics, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

“I hope by visiting the kids at Claremont, I may inspire even just one kid to go onto bigger and better things.”

Claremont Little Athletics president Jo Lockley said they were thrilled to have Mr Starc visit the centre.

“We were absolutely delighted to have a Commonwealth Games gold medallist like Brandon Starc talk to our athletes,” she said.

“High jump is one of the most popular events at our centre and his visit will have a significant impact on their motivation to stay in the sport and pursue their own athletics dreams.”

The Coles Little Athletes Big Dreams program saw Australian track and field stars Sally Pearson, Brandon Starc and Matthew Denny visit up to 24 grassroots Little Athletics centres across the country throughout November.

Coles is the major partner of Little Athletics Australia and community partner of Athletics Australia.

In addition to supporting the Coles Little Athletes Big Dreams community visitation program, Coles has donated more than 2.7 million bananas and provided more than $1.1 million in grants for sports equipment to Little Athletics centres across Australia, including 13 centres from Tasmania, over the past 12 months.
