Glenorchy welcomes new Council

THE newly elected Glenorchy City Council (GCC) aldermen have been officially welcomed into office at a reception at the Moonah Arts Centre on Friday 19 January.

Re-elected Glenorchy Mayor Kristie Johnston said she was “thrilled” to open a new chapter of history in Glenorchy.

“This is a time for fresh faces to make a fresh start in the City of Glenorchy and I look forward to working closely with my fellow aldermen and the opportunity to provide positive leadership to Glenorchy,” she said.

“This fresh start is the ideal time to put recent troubles behind us and focus on kicking goals for our community.

“Six of the aldermen who have been elected are first-timers to local government.

“We also have six females and six under the age of 40-years, so it is a very different looking Council to previous ones.

“This is sure to bring a great dynamic and vibrancy, not to mention a wealth of knowledge in vastly different areas.”

Deputy Mayor Matt Stevenson said the election had resulted in an “amazing mix” of alderman.

“This is a very different council to the ordinary and I am really excited about this great opportunity we now have to deliver for Glenorchy,” he said.

Glenorchy City Council general manager Tony McMullen said he would offer his full support to the incoming council and was looking forward to establishing positive working relationships.

“I congratulate the incoming mayor, deputy mayor and aldermen on their election,” he said.

“The management and staff of Glenorchy City Council will work closely with the newly elected Council to continue to deliver important local government services to our community.

“I would also like to thank Commissioner Sue Smith on her time with us and her ability to see us through to this changing of the guard.”
