Glenorchy Knights SAP girls’ team make their debut

THE Glenorchy Knights Football Club in conjunction with the Northern Suburbs Junior Soccer Association (NSJSA) has kicked off its girls-only Skills Acquisition Program (SAP) with a debut appearance at the statewide SAP festival in Launceston.

Six Glenorchy Knights teams, including two girls’ teams, made the trip to Churchill Park in Launceston to take part in the third statewide SAP festival, held from 19-20 September.

Around 50 girls participated in the event, representing eight licensed clubs running the program around the state.

Glenorchy Knights senior football coach and NSJSA president Chris Chalker said he was “very pleased” with the enthusiasm and number of players who started in the program during the third term.

“We have been overwhelmed with the number of girls wanting to play soccer and increase their skills with the help of female coaches from Glenorchy Knights, Brighton and Football Federation Tasmania’s Skillerettes program,” he said.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better start to our under-nine and under-10 girls’ SAP programs and term four will now see a move in training venue to Prince of Wales Bay.

“We will also be increasing the program to include under-11 and under-12 girls’ teams.”

Glenorchy Knights Football Club sponsor Anita Furjanic said the aim of term three was to have fun while being active and learning the four key skills of soccer – first-touch, running with the ball, striking the ball and one-on-one.

“We certainly achieved this aim with virtually all the girls taking the trip to Launceston,” she said.

The fourth term of the Glenorchy Knights SAP girls program begins on 12 October and will run on Mondays from 4.45-6pm at Prince of Wales Bay, Goodwood.

The program will cost $5 per session and players simply need to attend a session to register.

Players do not need to belong to the Glenorchy Knights to participate in the SAP program.
