Glenorchy Knights host largest SAP festival yet

THE Glenorchy Knights Football Club recently hosted its largest ever Skills Acquisition Program (SAP) festival at Prince of Wales Bay, Goodwood.

Glenorchy Knights president Paul Woodham said the Knights committee and parent volunteers worked tirelessly together to ensure another successful statewide festival.

“It was always going to be a challenge to host such an event during the season, especially when the club’s volunteers are busy doing what they normally do on a full weekend of games,” he said.

The SAP festival in early July was the largest recorded since the inception of the program in 2014.

Running for two-days, it saw more than 420 participants in 39 teams make the trip from around the state to showcase their skills in a non-results based competitive environment.

SAP coordinator Anita Furjanic said the Glenorchy Knights fielded teams in the under nine, 11 and 12 age groups.

“This year also saw Football Federation Tasmania (FFT) incorporate an under 12 SAP roster being played in the south at KGV on Sunday mornings,” she said,

“This has given players weekly games to further improve their skills and work together as a team.”

The Glenorchy Knights is one of only seven clubs with a license from FFT to run a SAP program for under nine to under 12 boys and girls.

“This year has seen an increase in participants in the program from other clubs in the northern suburbs region such as New Norfolk, Brighton and Derwent United,” Ms Furjanic said.

“Glenorchy Knights is also very appreciative of our sponsors – Coogans, Warren Ross Accounting, Battery World, T&J Glass and Enzed – which has assisted with the purchase of SAP uniforms this year.”

The third term of the Glenorchy Knights SAP program began on Monday 20 July and runs on Mondays from 4pm to 5 at Prince of Wales Bay, Goodwood and Wednesdays 5pm to 6 at Eady Street oval, opposite Glenorchy Central.

The program is coached by Glenorchy Knights coaches and senior players and costs $5 a session.

Players do not need to belong to the Glenorchy Knights to participate in the SAP program and simply need to attend a session to register.
