Glenorchy Fun Run builds momentum

THE Get Fit Tas Glenorchy Fun Run is gaining momentum for its 27th year, with the event set to be held at the Derwent Entertainment Centre on Sunday 30 July.

Organised by the Northern Suburbs Athletic Club, the Glenorchy Fun Run comprises three events – the Pace Financial Services 10-kilomtre run, the Running Edge five-kilometre run/walk (both starting at 10am) and the Northern Suburbs Athletic Club two-kilometre for primary school children (starting at 9.45am).

Northern Suburbs Athletic Club president David O’Brien said that following a record number in last year’s run, a big field of participants was expected for this year.

“Current entry numbers are well up on last year and we expect this trend to continue through to the day of the event,” he said.

“We really aim to take a family approach to the event – our club is totally driven by volunteers, so we are able to keep entry fees low and encourage local residents to get involved.

“Sure it is called a ‘fun run’, but we welcome everyone to come out to run, shuffle or walk.”

Mr O’Brien welcomed Get Fit Tas returning as the major sponsor for the 2017 event.

“Jason Allie of Get Fit Tas has prepared a training program for the event which is free and may be downloaded from the event website,” Mr O’Brien said.

Younger runners will be able to follow-up recent school cross-country carnivals with a choice of two-kilometre or five-kilometre events.

Parents will be able to continue the southern fun run program and participate alongside their children.

A 20 per cent discount is also available for families of four or more who enter this year’s event.

Events start and finish at the Derwent Entertainment Centre and incorporate the GASP! Boardwalk, which provides a stunning view of the Derwent Estuary.

The Northern Suburbs Athletic Club two-kilometre event is for school age children and is held on a traffic-free road, on which younger children can safely participate.

Parents are able to view the entire event from the start/finish area or may accompany their children in this race.

Primary and secondary schools are encouraged to put teams together to participate and as an incentive, two school sports packs will be awarded to the most outstanding primary and high school in this year’s races.

Entries for the Get Fit Tas Glenorchy Fun Run are now open.
