Glenorchy City Tennis Club hits a winner at state awards

THE Glenorchy City Tennis Club has celebrated wins in two separate categories at the inaugural 2016 Tennis Tasmania Awards.

Its major event, the Glenorchy Open 2015, took out the award for the ‘Most Outstanding Australian Ranking Tournament’, while club member Ollie Wuttke was awarded the Volunteer Achievement Award.

The award winners were presented with their certificates during the recent 2017 Hobart International.

They also went in the running for the national awards, which were presented as part of the Newcombe Medal, Australian Tennis Awards, held in Melbourne in November 2016.

Glenorchy City Tennis Club event coordinator Julie Fletcher said the Glenorchy Open tournament, which has been running for 20-years, was a popular event for locals and interstate players.

“Players return regularly to compete for points and a prize pool worth $10,000,” she said.

“Spectators, players and officials often enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner with the club volunteers who donate many homemade goodies for the event.

“The club appreciates the assistance provided by many local sponsors who contributed towards this event for the benefit of both the club and the community.”

Ms Fletcher said that it came as “no surprise” that Ollie Wuttke took out the Volunteer Achievement Award.

She said Mr Wuttke was well known around the courts and within the tennis community and was “the very heart of the club.”

“Ollie organises and oversees all the club’s committees and infrastructure improvements, ensuring that everything runs smoothly,” she said.

“The club was very proud to have received these awards.”

The Tennis Tasmania Awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of players and the contribution of tennis club members involved in the sport.
