Football fun at Dominic College

MORE than 200 year five and six students recently enjoyed a fun day of football at Dominic College during the annual Catholic Schools Primary Football Round Robin event.

Participating schools included Holy Rosary Primary School (Claremont), Corpus Christi Catholic School (Bellerive), St Brigid’s Primary School (New Norfolk), St Paul’s Primary School (Bridgewater) and Dominic College (Glenorchy).

The day was an introduction to friendly sporting competition, the basics of teamwork and will lead to increased involvement in school and community team sports as the students grow older.

Dominic College was pleased to work with the Glenorchy District Football Club to offer football clinic sessions throughout the day to all teams.

Glenorchy senior assistant coach Matthew Smith, who took the students through skill development activities, said he was delighted to have the opportunity to work with a variety of students.

“AFL brings together people of all ages, backgrounds, shapes and sizes to enjoy this great game of ours,” he said.

The skills sessions provided the students with a taste of football at a higher level and keen footballers were motivated to keep working on their skills.

Mr Smith said he encouraged the students to work hard.

“Always be practising skills because you know your opponent will be,” he said.

Dominic College’s health and physical education kindergarten to year 10 director Cameron Golding said students enjoyed the day and showed great enthusiasm.

“There were smiles all-round with teams giving their best and showing extremely good sportsmanship,” he said.

“New friendships were made, new skills were learned and the students threw themselves into the games with passion.”

Mr Golding said he appreciated the support of parents and teachers from all the schools who looked after the teams on the day.
