Family fun with a run

GLENORCHY residents are encouraged to get active this winter by joining together with family to participate in the 25th annual Glenorchy Fun Run.

With this year’s event focused on family participation, a 20 per cent discount is available for families of four or more who enter the competition.

Younger runners will be able to follow-up recent school cross-country events with a choice of two or five kilometre events and parents will be able to continue the southern fun run program participating alongside their children.

Race director Tony Sansom said following a record field in the 2014 run, an increased number of participants were expected this year.

“Current entry numbers are well up on last year and we expect this trend to continue through to the day of the race,” he said.

“We really aim to take a family approach to the event and our club is driven by volunteers, so we are able to keep costs down and target a broad range of local residents to get involved.

“Sure it is called a ‘fun run’, but we welcome anyone to come out and run, walk or shuffle.”

The Glenorchy Fun Run comprises three events – the Boardwalk Fish ‘n Chips 10km, the Running Edge five kilometre (both starting at 10am) and the ENZED Hobart two kilometre, for the primary school children, starting at 9.45am.

Events start and finish at the Derwent Entertainment Centre and incorporate the GASP! Boardwalk, which provides a stunning view of the Derwent Estuary.

Mr Sansom said northern suburb athletes Grant Page and Mel Daniels would be hard to beat in the Boardwalk Fish ‘n Chips 10-kilometre event.

“Page is now back to full fitness after an injury interrupted 2014 and is seeking his ninth win,” he said.

“Daniels will be pushed all the way by club team-mate Ruth Wilson, who was recently crowned Tasmanian 10-kilometre road champion.”

The ENZED Hobart two-kilometre event is designed for school age children and will be held on a traffic-free road to ensure safe participation.

Parents will be able to accompany children in this race.

Mr Sansom said, as an added incentive, all children in this race would receive a souvenir race number and a chance to win some great prizes for their school.

“Hazell Bros has sponsored two school sports packs and primary and secondary students are encouraged to put teams together to participate this year,” he said.

“The Glenorchy City Council has been a strong supporter of the event during the past 25 years and has once again sponsored the 2015 event.”
