Expressions of interest sought for greyhound kennel facility

TASRACING is seeking expressions of interest for the company to purchase an existing kennel facility suitable for its Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP).

Tasracing chief executive officer Paul Eriksson said a dedicated facility owned and operated by Tasracing with full public access would allow the GAP to better demonstrate to the community that greyhounds were perfectly suited to being pets.

“To date, the GAP has been based out of the private kennels of the GAP coordinator,” he said.

“While Tasracing has greatly appreciated being able to operate the GAP from a private residence and kennels, it has made it difficult for members of the public to engage with the program and meet and greet greyhounds.

“A kennel facility owned and operated by Tasracing will address this and assist the public to visit and interact with greyhounds that are available for adoption.”

Tasracing’s GAP has been in operation since late 2009 and during 2017/18, GAP rehomed 102 greyhounds into the Tasmanian community.

Eighty-five greyhounds were rehomed in 2016.

In 2019/20 to date, 96 greyhounds have been adopted.

The current waiting list on the GAP website has 91 greyhounds either waiting or ready to be rehomed.

Tasracing’s goal is to reach a re-homing target of more than 150 greyhounds through its GAP facility annually.

Responses to the EOI are to be lodged electronically at eoi-kennels@tasracing.com.au by 5pm on 12 July 2019.
