Dance student success

DOMINIC College elective dance students enjoyed success at the Southern Tasmanian Dancing Eisteddfod in July with one first place win and a ‘Highly Commended’ award.

Year eight and a combined year nine and 10 dance class each performed in the All Schools Educational Section for secondary students amidst a strong section of ten groups from six schools.

Competing against the best of Hobart’s independent schools, including college students studying dance for their TCE, Dominic College’s year nine and 10 troupe took out first place.

Dominic College Director of Creative Arts K-10 Mike O’Brien said the year nine and 10 troupe were “outstanding.”

“They had developed a haunting and sophisticated contemporary lyrical routine that incorporated great storytelling and solid technique,” he said.

“The piece utilised the strengths and capabilities of both the boys and girls in the class.”

The younger group of year eight students received a Highly Commended award for their “powerful, emotional routine.”

Mr O’Brien said the adjudicator’s feedback for both Dominic College classes praised the students for their attack and commitment.

Dominic College principal Beth Gilligan attributed the success of both classes to student commitment and the quality of their teacher Jenina Evans.

Ms Evans, founder and principal of the highly successful Jenina’s Dance Workshop (JDW), has been teaching dance at Dominic College since 2015 in a partnership agreement between the school and JDW.

“On top of their polished technical work, the students were emotionally connected to the routines and to each other,” Ms Gilligan said.

“Jenina sets the bar high for our students.

“She is an outstanding dance teacher and the quality and originality of her choreography is unmatched.”

The performances of both classes can be viewed on Dominic College’s YouTube channel at

Both dance classes will perform again in the Dominic College Music & Dance Showcase in September.
