Dad’s Day Out fun for the whole family

ABOUT 400 people gathered at the Hobart YMCA in November to celebrate the role men play in the lives of their children.

The Glenorchy City Council’s “Dad’s Day Out” event saw fathers and their families enjoy a range of fun activities, including learning about local endangered species with the Parks and Wildlife Discovery Ranger and a game of modified tennis on the mini tennis courts, facilitated by Dickson Tennis.

There was plenty of hammering in the Bunnings Warehouse area, where Bunnings staff helped dads and kids to make their very own toolboxes.

Face-painting, fairy activities, bubble balls, crafts and games were all popular as Playgroup Tasmania opened its new premises and toy library, now operating from the YMCA.

Children and adults also took up the opportunity to learn new skills with Social Circus Tasmania.

A highlight of the day was the announcement of the YMCA Community Father of the Year, Jason Edwards from Dodges Ferry, who was nominated by his daughter Estella.

Glenorchy Mayor Kristie Johnston presented the award and spoke about the importance of good fathering and its influence on developing strong, confident and connected children.

Families also enjoyed a free barbecue cooked by the Glenorchy Lions Club and were invited to make their own special fruit smoothies, while pedalling on the Glenorchy on the Go “Smoothie Bike”.

The Dad’s Day Out Committee would like to thank the individuals and organisations listed below for their sponsorship and participation in this successful event:

Family Food Patch, Child and Family Centre Chigwell, Mission Australia, Kidsafe, RACT, Playgroup Tasmania, Bunnings Warehouse, YMCA, Glenorchy on the Go Volunteer Ambassadors, League of Heroes, White Ribbon Ambassador Program, Dickson Tennis and Girl Guides and Glenorchy City Council.
