ST Anne’s Cricket Club will begin refurbishment of their existing clubrooms after receiving a grant from the Federal Government.

Liberal Senator Jonathan Duniam joined club secretary Rod Flack to announce an investment of $32,917 due to the second round of the Federal Government’s Community Sport Infrastructure Program.

Mr Flack said the funds would go to improving the clubrooms to provide better facilities for members.

“When the grant came about we thought it would be the ideal one to do because it was all about participation and improved facilities – exactly what we needed,” he said.

“We built our clubrooms about 15 years ago and it’s getting pretty tired.

“Our club has four senior teams, four junior teams and a women’s team to support, so we’d like to have more modern and comfortable facilities to help numbers grow.”

The upgrades are set to begin in the next month for completion by the end of June and will include the laying of new carpet, the inclusion of updated furniture and the repainting of the clubrooms.

With the Claremont Junior Football Club using the facilities over the winter, Mr Flack said the refurbishments would benefit the whole community.

“We were formed in 1965 and have since grown from a one-team club to a nine-team club,” he said.

“We’ve been gradually growing and improving over those years and have become a successful club off the field and on the field.”

Senator Duniam said it was great to see local sporting clubs provide opportunities for communities.

“These clubs are a great place for communities to meet, for young kids to improve their health and fitness,” he said.

“Grassroots sports help drive increased participation and promote social, health and community benefits of physical activity and sport.”
