Craft and friendship go hand in hand

THE Claremont Craft Group has a proud history of learning new craft-making skills and creating valued friendships.

The group, which is currently offering a number of classes including mosaic, card-making, jewellery making and embroidery, is on the lookout for new members to join in its weekly sessions.

It runs weekly on Wednesdays and provides a space for members to come and work on their own craft projects.

Many of the members make gifts for Christmas presents or to donate to local charities.

Group coordinator Suzanne Watkins said the group had recently lost some members who had moved away or into nursing homes.

“It would be so lovely to see new members come into the group,” she said.

The Claremont Craft Group is an initiative of the Claremont precinct and started in the Claremont Memorial Hall in 2004 with crochet classes.

After being disbanded recently and almost coming to an end, the group approached the Claremont RSL, who welcomed the Craft Group and provided tables, hot drinks, power, heating and cooling, and public liability insurances.

This was provided at no cost to the group and the ladies are pleased to be able to continue their classes each week.

Ms Watkins said the group of 30 ladies had been extremely grateful for the hospitality of the Claremont RSL, and regularly donated in thanks for the accommodation.

“It’s so lovely for us to be back together doing crafts again each week,” she said.

“We work together, chat together and have a cup of tea together.

“A lot of us are going through the stages of losing people so it’s nice to have somewhere to go and chat with new friends.

“Everybody is supportive and willing to have a chat, and it’s great that we get the opportunity to work on and learn different craft skills at the same time.”
