Claremont claims SFL trifecta

CLAREMONT Football Club dominated the Tasmanian Southern Football League (SFL) finals held in September at KGV Oval in Glenorchy.

After a strong season, favourites Claremont took an early lead over New Norfolk in the seniors’ game to win 16.15.111 to New Norfolk’s 6.11.47.

Claremont’s resounding victory looked certain from early on as the side managed to keep New Norfolk to just one goal in the second quarter.

The Magpies’ momentum continued and New Norfolk could do nothing to stop them, struggling to convert for most of the game.

Claremont also claimed victory in the reserves, with a final score of 10.17.77 to Brighton’s 4.1.25.

The colts match, which started the day, also went to Claremont – 6.7.43 to Huonville 6.5.41.

Claremont Football Club president Christine Carr said the club had worked tirelessly during the season.

“We are thrilled we the finals’ results,” she said.

“We would like to thank our outstanding players, sponsors, members, committee, volunteers and supporters, as well as our extraordinary coaching staff led by Kim Excell, David Hunt, Todd Lewis, Brett Carr, Trent Pennicott, Robbie Iles, Grant Chilcott and Brendon Briers – what a fantastic team.

“What a proud club we are.”

Speaker of the House of Assembly Elise Archer was on hand to present medals and the best player award for the reserves match.

“It was an absolute highlight of today’s Southern Football League finals to present the best player and premiership medals, and the Reserves’ Premiership Cup to my team, Claremont,” Ms Archer said.

“It was a great family day and it was lovely to see many of the players’ families involved in the medal presentation.”

The trifecta of victories came on top of Claremont’s Nathan Brown claiming the William Leitch medal for the season with 31 votes.

“It really was a dream season for the Magpies and all eyes will be on them next season to see if they can continue their winning streak,” Ms Archer said.
