AROUND 150 community members converged on Dominic College to acknowledge and celebrate the role of men at an International Men’s Day Breakfast.

The event featured special guest speaker Liam Jones, a 2007 Dominic College old scholar who is best known for his successful AFL career, making his debut with the Western Bulldogs and more recently playing with the Carlton Football Club.

The theme of the breakfast was ‘Men Leading by Example’ and in his presentation, Mr Jones shared his personal journey, reminding the audience of the importance of working hard, taking risks and challenges, and persevering.

He shared how the support of his family was also an important factor in achieving success.

“Liam Jones is certainly an excellent role model for students of outstanding work ethic, setting challenging personal goals and preparedness to make sacrifices to reach his goals,” Dominic College principal Beth Gilligan said.

“He shared his story generously and with an openness that inspired our students and parents.

“Liam has not been passive in responding to career obstacles in professional football and names determination and hard work as the keys to success.”

The annual breakfast event focuses on men’s health and wellbeing, as well as their social, emotional and physical development.

It is also a time to highlight discrimination against men, which needs awareness and open discussions.

The breakfast acts as an annual fundraiser for educational scholarships for boys in the Pacific.

All proceeds go towards scholarships for disadvantaged boys and young men to attend Dominic College’s brother school, the Don Bosco Technical School in Alafua, Samoa.

This year, more than $2,400 was raised for boys to attend the Don Bosco Technical Centre.
