Book swap ignites a passion for reading

A FREE Book Swap instigated by Austins Ferry local Joe Nahas is reinvigorating a passion for reading in the local community.

“It’s all about sharing books to read,” Mr Nahas said.

“A book box is placed at a convenient location and local community members are free to take a book, read it and then swap it for another one – all free of charge.

“I picked up the idea in Germany where Book Swaps are commonly used and are sponsored and maintained by local councils.

“It’s like a community library, but without all the fuss – no membership, no library cards and no worrying about late return fees.

“I loved the idea and decided to take it upon myself to set one up for my local area.

“While there are a few Book Swaps located in Tasmania, they are not very common and I just thought this was a great way to get involved in the community and show that I care.”

Built over a few days and installed on Mr Nahas’ driveway, the Book Swap has now been up and running for a few weeks.

Already, it boasts a selection of more than 100 books.

“The response has been amazing and people are really commending the idea,” Mr Nahas said.

“Ironically, I only read my first book this year and have quickly discovered a passion for it.

“In today’s world of technology, you no longer see as many books around, so hopefully this will be a way to once again spark people’s interest.”

Looking to the future, Mr Nahas said he would like to see Book Swaps become common in shopping malls and public spaces around Tasmania.

The Book Swap is located at 21 Wakehurst Road, Austins Ferry.
