Body image forum promotes open discussion

THE way people view their bodies and the thoughts and feelings that are experienced as a result of this view was a topic up for discussion among young people at a body image forum held in 2016.

The forum was delivered by the Glenorchy Youth Task Force (GYTF) in conjunction with Working it Out, Pulse Youth Health South and Family Planning as part of Glenorchy City Council’s Mental Health Week expo, “All of Me”.

More than 50 students from Cosgrove, Montrose Bay and New Town high schools attended the day and participated in sessions that tackled topics ranging from body image in the media and gender perceptions to eating disorders.

Students had the opportunity to discuss what positive body image meant to them, as well as communicate ideas and gather information to share with their peers.

The forum also included a positive body image slogan competition run by the task force.

Winning slogans were developed into stickers that will be distributed at youth events throughout the year.

For more information about the GYTF contact the council on telephone 6216 6800.
