August brings Glenorchy community together
AUGUST was a month of connection and community spirit across Glenorchy, with Council-supported events bringing residents together through sport, music, friendship and shared experiences.
The Winter Warmer Community Expo gave residents the chance to meet, connect and discover local services, with performances from Silvertones and Trish Norchick on the harp adding to the atmosphere.
At Kick It to KGV, the community came together for a day of free activities, food, entertainment and giveaways, celebrating inclusion and a shared love of footy.
Attendees also had the opportunity to meet AFL Premiership player Ashley McGrath and learn more about local programs and support services.
The event was supported by Glenorchy District Football Club, Karadi Aboriginal Corporation, AFL PLAY, Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania and the Big Tassie Walk.
During Loneliness Week, 1000 Hearts and Dementia Australia’s Friendship Hub groups joined together for a community lunch celebrating kindness, connection and belonging.
Council’s CommUNITY Development team supported the event, helping create a welcoming space for people to meet, share stories and build friendships.
Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey said the events demonstrated the importance of creating opportunities for people to connect.
“It has been wonderful to see our community come together throughout August,” she said.
“Whether it’s through sport, music, a shared meal or simply meeting someone new, these events help create a stronger, more welcoming and connected Glenorchy.”
Mayor Hickey thanked the community groups, volunteers, performers, organisations and residents who helped make the events possible.
“Our community is at its best when we come together, and I’m proud to see so many people contributing to making Glenorchy a place where everyone feels welcome and included,” she said.
