THREE Dominic College students have won prestigious ICAS medals in 2018 for being Tasmania’s top achievers.

Each year, more than one million students from more than 6,300 schools in Australia and New Zealand participate in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) conducted by the University of New South Wales.

ICAS are online based assessments that recognise and reward academic excellence.

The assessments are based on the curricula for the relevant year and students are required to demonstrate a deep, integrated, and thorough level of learning.

This year, four 2018 ICAS medals have been awarded to three Dominic College students for placing first in Tasmania.

Grace Wilson, year two, and Sebastian Smith, year three, have both been awarded medals for first in the state for spelling.

This is Sebastian’s second ICAS spelling medal, as he also won Tasmania’s 2017 medal.

Year eight student Oscar Breslin was awarded medals for first in the state in both science and mathematics.

This recognition continues Oscar’s outstanding record in ICAS achievement.

Oscar received ICAS medals in both English and maths in 2017 and in English in 2015 when he was in year five.

Dominic College principal Beth Gilligan said she was extremely proud of the three students and congratulated them on their outstanding academic achievement.

“The college has a very strong spelling program in our formative early years and it is pleasing to see this paying dividends for our students through externally assessed levels of proficiency,” she said.

Ms Gilligan said Oscar was an excellent all-rounder academically and a “passionate learner with a fine mind.”

Oscar, Sebastian and Grace were presented with their ICAS medals at the annual year six to 10 Awards Ceremony that was held in the college’s Savio Centre in late November.
