A winter wardrobe for those in need

WITH winter well and truly setting in, community members have been encouraged to help those experiencing hardship by donating new or quality items as part of Hobart City Mission’s (HCM) winter appeal.

The winter appeal raises funds and awareness for HCM’s Emergency Assistance Program, where individuals can receive emergency relief, advice and essential items.

A partnership between HCM and Northgate has seen an easily accessibly drop point set up at the shopping centre.

Donations of blankets, jumpers, sleeping bags, socks and other items can be made at the old Wendy’s location, next to Target.

“We are very community-minded here at Northgate,” Northgate marketing manager Verity Davis said.

“We encourage everyone to donate new or second-hand winter warmers to help those struggling in our community.”

HCM chief executive officer John Stubley said it was at this time of year when most of us could go home to a warm meal and bed that it really hit home how important it was to assist those experiencing hardship.

Financial donations for the winter appeal are also being accepted at Northgate’s Centre management office, located opposite Rockmans.

HCM’s Emergency Assistance Program employs trained community service workers to determine the client’s support needs, provide practical assistance and, if necessary, refer them to relevant services.

The donations from Northgate will be sent to HCM’s op shops for individuals who are experiencing hardship, with vouchers provided through emergency assistance appointments or sold to help fund HCM’s vital services.
