A haven for parents and carers

SHOPPING with children can be difficult.

Between juggling multiple grocery bags while pushing a pram and responding to the demands parents and carers are all too familiar with, as well as trying to keep little ones safe, shopping centres can be daunting places for young families.

To remedy this, Northgate has taken a range of steps to ensure that customers who shop with young children have an experience that is as simple and stress-free as possible.

The shopping centre recently upgraded the furniture of its Parents’ Room, upholding the already five-star Australian Breastfeeding Association rating.

Northgate Shopping Centre retail marketing coordinator Samantha Skillern said the upgraded furniture added a more inviting and contemporary feel.

“The new furniture enhances our existing space, which includes private breastfeeding areas, changing facilities, junior and adult toilets, a secure playpen and a television area that shows childrens’ programs,” she said.

“The Parents’ Room is used so frequently and we want to make the environment as comfortable as possible.

“We have a lot of customers who care for young children and who choose to only shop at Northgate purely because of the easy access our facilities.”

Ms Skillern said it was important for fathers and male carers to know that they were also welcome to use the facilities.

“We also have junior urinals in the male toilets for young boys to use,” she said.

As well as the Parent’s Room, the Northgate car park has multiple “parents’ only” parking spaces.

“We have parents’ parking at both the northern and southern entrances of the centre,” Ms Skillern said.

“These undercover parks are close by to the entrance doors so that parents with prams and strollers can access the centre easily and safely.”

Ms Skillern said another reason Northgate was so popular with young families was the access to “Kiddy Cruisers”.

“Kiddy Cruisers are fun little mobiles for children to ride in, while also acting as shopping trollies for parents,” she said.

“These have come in handy to many parents who have forgotten their prams or strollers and kids love them.

“Shoppers can hire these out for a small cost through Centre Management.”

Northgate Shopping Centre is open Monday to Thursday from 9am to 5.30pm, Friday 9am to 8pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm.
