THE New Town and Glenorchy Football Clubs will cap off a milestone year in November with a celebration acknowledging the champions of the game at one of the biggest events on the football calendar.
Past and current players and officials will descend on the Glenorchy Football Club on 15 November to honour the achievements and contributions made by past and present players at the New Town and Glenorchy Past Players and Officials Association’s Annual Hall of Fame Dinner.
Current Glenorchy player Jaye Bowden will be this year’s sole inductee into the Hall of Fame, with the association introducing a new concept to celebrate the centenary year.
The association historian Graham Kelly said the 100 Centenary Champions was introduced by the association’s treasurer to recognise the outstanding players of the club over the past 100 years.
“This is probably one of the greatest concepts that has been created and the response has been exceptional from players and members alike,” he said.
“There were a total of 20 players, coaches and captains required to lodge a list of players who they considered would qualify for the 100 Centenary Champions list.
“It’s respecting the contribution and achievement of players, and those who were considered to be players that would have an impact on the game – it’s just paying homage to great players of the club over that period of time.”
More than 250 nominations were received, including players from the pre-World War Two era to the modern-day champion.
“It’s important from a historical point of view that people can reflect back on such achievements of individuals over a long period of time and we’re very fortunate to have very good records in that regard,” Mr Kelly said.
The final 100 will be presented with a framed centenary certificate and will have their name etched on an honour board for prosperity.
John X will act as the master of ceremonies and will be accompanied by the Legends of the Revue cast to add a different dimension to the celebrations.
